Service Users

What is this service all about?

This is a service to support you learn to live safely and confidently on your own. You’ll stay in a shared apartment with staff support, and we’ll support you build the skills you need to get ready for your own place.

Our staff are trained to support people with learning disabilities and mental health needs. We assess risks carefully, create personalised support plans, and work closely with each person to build their ability to manage risks confidently and independently – not just avoid them.

No – and that’s okay. You’ll have support when you need it, and we’ll teach you how to look after yourself safely even when staff aren’t around. You’ll also learn what to do in emergencies and how to ask for support.

We support you learn how to:

  • Spot unsafe situations (like strangers at the door or scams)
  • Use the kitchen safely
  • Travel safely on your own
  • Deal with problems calmly
  • Know who to call if something feels wrong

We don’t just keep you safe – we teach you how to keep yourself safe.

You’ll learn things like:

  • Cooking and planning your meals
  • Cleaning your room and doing laundry
  • Budgeting and paying for bills
  • Getting around by bus, tram, or walking
  • Managing your feelings and routines
  • Making your own decisions

That’s part of learning! We’ll support you figure out what happened, talk it through, and try again. Nobody gets everything right the first time – this is a safe place to learn.

Yes! You can bring clothes, photos, games, posters – anything that makes you feel at home in your room.

Yes – you choose who stays involved. We’ll support you to stay connected in a way that feels right for you.

This will depend on how much support you need. As we are a short term service, the maximum stay is 12 months

That’s okay – we’re here to support. You’ll have a keyworker to talk to and we’ll support you build routines, calm strategies, and confidence. Learning to live independently doesn’t mean doing it alone.

Yes – that’s the goal! When you’re ready, we’ll support you apply for an apartment of house, understand tenancy rules, and prepare for the move. You’ll have support every step of the way.

Day centres and life skills apartments are great places to learn skills in a group – but living on your own is different. At Vigilant Care, you get to:

  • Try out what you’ve learned in real life with limited support
  • Get support with things you can’t practise at college or day centres
  • Build your confidence doing everyday things by yourself

Yes! We want you to keep doing the things that are supporting you grow. We’ll support you get there on time, plan your week, and manage your energy so you can do both.

No – they work together. You can go to your course during the day and come back to your apartment in the evening where you use those skills to live more independently. That’s how you learn to manage in real life.
